The bison, also known as the American buffalo, is a large, herbivorous mammal that is native to North America. These majestic animals can weigh up to 2,200 pounds and stand up to six feet tall at the shoulder. Bison have shaggy, dark brown fur, a massive head with curved horns, and a hump on their shoulders that supports their powerful muscles. They are known for their strong and agile movements and can run at speeds of up to 40 miles per hour. Once a symbol of the American West, bison were hunted almost to extinction in the late 19th century, but conservation efforts have helped their populations recover to around 30,000 individuals.
