Millipedes are a type of arthropod that belong to the class Diplopoda. They are known for their long, segmented bodies that can be anywhere from a few millimeters to over a foot in length, depending on the species. Despite their name, millipedes don’t actually have a thousand legs – they typically have around 30 to 400 legs, depending on the species.
Millipedes are found all over the world, living in a variety of habitats from rainforests to deserts. They are decomposers, feeding on dead plant material and other organic matter. Some species can be harmful if handled, as they may secrete a toxic substance from their bodies as a defense mechanism.
